Let’s take a little vaca

The last few weeks have been a complete whirlwind.  Work has been crazy, I’ve missed my family like crazy-just everything pure crazy.  Michael and I had a few days where we could both get away and decided that after nearly 7 years together, it was due time to have a vacation-just the two of us.  Alright, so it was a mini-vacation, but still-I’ll take 2.5 days over nothing!  I asked around and got some recommendations from people I work with, and we decided to celebrate our very first solo-cation in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

To be honest, I had never heard of Blue Ridge.  Being from Ohio, most of the time when someone wants to escape to a cabin in the mountains they go to Hocking Hills, so knowing there was something similar (side note: I say similar, I have no first hand experience because I managed to live in Ohio for 9304839 years and never actually made it to Hocking Hills) only 3.5 hours away from Nashville seemed perfect for a little getaway.  We took a risk, booked a small cabin online, and prayed that the when we showed up it would look like it did in the pictures (it did).

We ended up renting a cabin called “Four Season’s” through A Blue Ridge Vacation Cabin Rentals.  It was a perfect 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin, and we really wanted to stay forever.

I mean, that living room-it was gorgeous.

IMG_5644Alright, so I’m no good at panoramic photos, but you get the idea.  I would have loved to have a  view of the mountains, but this view wasn’t anything to complain about!  Plus, we saw a few deer eating their breakfast one morning, so I was happy.

We planned on going paddleboarding our first day in Blue Ridge.  Neither of us had gone before, but found a great guy who gave us a lesson and a trip on Blue Ridge Lake.  He and his wife (and two dogs!) taught us the basics and we spent the rest of the afternoon traveling the lake and taking in the views.  All in all we were on the water over 4 hours (note to self: more sunscreen next time), saw some beautiful scenery and totally fell in love.  Seriously, we’re already plotting how we can work a paddle board into our wedding registry.

IMG_5664IMG_5663If anyone is looking for a great paddle board instructor/people in general in the area, look up Chris at SUP Blue Ridge (surfblueridge-sup.com)-AMAZING.  Afterwards we stopped to grab a bite to eat at Toccoa Riverside Restaurant.  I’m almost ashamed to say it, but we ate Cajun Popcorn-read:crawfish tails-AND I LIKED IT.

this picture doesn’t look like much, so just trust me-worth it.

Our last day in Blue Ridge, we knew it was going to rain in the afternoon and wanted to stay low key for the day.  We also slept in until about 11am because my father decided he would have a “heart event” aka minor heart attack the night before (he is fine and at home now and doing great and told me not to come home to Ohio so don’t judge me), so we were up most of the night-anyway, so we decided to go to downtown Blue Ridge that afternoon and take it easy.  And then I saw this…hellooooo moose shrub.

Oh hey, Bullwinkle

I also decided to break my 8 month stretch of being devoid of beer for just one afternoon, #thanksgluten, so we ventured to Blue Ridge Brewery and had some lunch and some local beers.  They had a few beers on tap they brew in house, and they didn’t disappoint.

The rest of our time away was spent relaxing in the hot tub, tending to very burnt skin, and screaming at spider intruders.  We didn’t get a chance to go hiking, which we are bummed about, but that just means we have to go back.  Our vacation was short but I don’t think we could have picked a better location to spend a few days away.  We will see you again, Blue Ridge.

Who says you can’t go home?

This past weekend I made my first trek back ‘home’ to Ohio since I moved to Nashville.  Before I moved, one of my mentors told me that I shouldn’t go back to Ohio the first month after I moved.  I needed to acclimate to my new home-I needed to connect here.  I listened.  It was painful.  But I made it.  After week 6 I packed up Monster and made the drive to see my fur-mily…

‘Home’ for the rest of the Hoskright clan is currently Yellow Springs, OH.  In the nearly 7 years I’ve been with Michael, I haven’t done two things everyone who goes to Yellow Springs HAS TO DO-mini golf at Young’s, and see the actual yellow spring-this weekend we changed that.

My last day in town we headed to Glen Helen Nature Preserve.  Voila, I give you the orange yellow spring.  Due to the iron content in the water, the rocks are stained a vivid orange/yellow hue.

The Glen is beautiful, and I can’t believe I went so long without actually seeing it.  We ventured there right before I needed to head back to Nashville, so while I didn’t see much, what I did see was spectacular.

Like all weekends, it wasn’t long enough.  6 weeks down, at least 46 more to go.

It’s July already, and I’ve been in Nashville for just under a month.  The hardest thing about being here by far is the fact that I’m away from my family and the rest of my fur-babies.  I’ve never lived alone, or in an apartment for that matter, so this has been a huge adjustment.  I have realized that I suck at grocery shopping, cooking for one person isn’t fun, and I really was the one who left all the cabinets open (sorry, Michael!).  Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and forget where I am.  Sometimes I come home and still expect my dogs to greet me at the door.  Now, it’s just me and Monster, holding down the [Nashville] fort.

Monster in the city

This past weekend was the 4th of July.  Michael was able to come down from Ohio, America had a birthday, and we spent the long weekend exploring some of the great things this city has to offer.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t exactly cooperate and we didn’t make it downtown for the fireworks, but Sunday was beautiful and we headed to Edwin Warner Park.  With this beautiful park only being a 30 minute drive from where I live, I will definitely be a frequent visitor.

We had no agenda, which was perfect.  We walked through the woods and up/down the hills (giant hills? mini-mountains? mini, forest-covered mountains? Tennessee, your terrain confuses me…) and just enjoyed being outside.  And it was gorgeous.

Doesn’t this look like it came straight out of FernGully?

The trail we followed was 2.5 miles.  It had rained beforehand so it was a little slippery, and given this wasn’t a planned excursion Michael didn’t have the best footwear, but we were both so glad we went.  We took our time and enjoyed our surroundings.  It was a great way to spend a few hours on a slow, lazy Sunday.

Oh, and apparently the secret to making a good ‘sangria’ is not really knowing what the hell you’re doing.  IMG_5228

I took a bottle of white wine (Yellowtail), poured it into a pitcher, and added: citrus (orange, lemon and lime-all sans peel and cut into pieces), 2 apples-diced, and a peach-diced. I let everything get friendly for 3 hours in the fridge, then removed the citrus because holy bitterness and added 3 Tbsp sugar.  When I was ready to serve, I added some club soda and a splash of cranberry.  I was happy.

All in all, it was a great weekend.  I wish it was longer but with Independence Day, the great outdoors and a little vino, you can’t really complain.

And so it begins…

Two weeks ago, a new chapter in my life officially began.  After goodbyes were said and a UHaul was packed, I hit the road at 5:30 in the morning from Columbus, OH to Nashville, TN.

My fiancé pulled my belongings across state lines, and I, with a furry co-rider by my side, drove in disbelief that after months of anticipation, I was actually moving south.  Once we arrived in Music City, I was surprised how comfortable it felt to finally be here.  My little apartment is just that, little, but it’s cozy and has a pretty great view of the southern sky.

Like most things in life, this particular move wasn’t really a part of the plan.  Yeah, yeah, yeah-I agreed to be relocated for work, but it never really sunk in that I would be moving to a new state, living in a new city, working a new job-alone.  The fiancé, my three adorable dogs, one more cat, family, friends, sanity-all of it are back in Ohio.  So this will be a year of adventures, learning new things, living outside my comfort zone, and a long distance relationship.  And hey, lets add wedding planning to that, too, because that will be fun I must be insane.

I started this blog as a way to chronicle my adventures, my mishaps, the things I love, and what I’m up to-mainly for me, but for anyone else who chooses to follow along with the madness.

And Nashville-thanks for the great start.  I can’t wait to see what’s in store from here.
